Taste of Life

A drop of it reaches the tip of my tongue
I taste it
Enjoying the fullness of its sweetness
As the taste travels on
Comes a slight sourness
Some saltiness
And then bitterness
So bitter that it overwhelms all other tastes
Longer than expected
After tasting its wholeness
I swallow hard
And place my tongue out again
Ready to receive any drops
If any could possibly
Drop onto my tongue again

I must first learn to taste
Bitter, sweet, salty and sour
Then I learn how to swallow
Drop by drop I await
I cannot rush it
I daren’t dare dream too big
I must take things slowly
Drop by drop
Till I’m ready for more
Then gulp by gulp would I get
A little more
The thirst is quenched
Until one day I might learn
To drink it all without many qualms

Drop by drop it goes
For every drop of it
Bitterness lingers
But I long for more
I long to taste the sweetness
Although knowing that bitterness ensues
And let the bitterness handle itself.

This is life.
